For 50 years, Ronald B. Stark, DDS has provided patients with happier, healthier smiles through his own California-based dental practice, where he specializes in restorative and cosmetic dentistry. As a testament to his dedication, Dr. Stark earned an “America’s Top Dentist” award from the Consumers’ Research Council of America in 2008. But he hasn’t just elicited smiles in the office; upon graduating with a dental degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine in 1973, he parlayed his lifelong sense of humor into a part-time stand-up comedy career.
Working as a dentist by day, he would perform in clubs in Los Angeles by night, including The Improv and Comedy Store. Throughout the 1980s, he found success in that world as “The Funniest Dentist in America,” winning comedy competitions and working with major comics like David Letterman and Robin Williams—including routines from the perspective of being a working dentist.
In addition to his robust professional career, Dr. Stark has been active as a world-class athlete, collecting numerous awards over the years in tennis, basketball, and football. There are YouTube videos of him playing basketball as well as tennis with Martina Navratilova and Tracy Austin. At the tennis trials for the 2022 Maccabi Games in Florida, he finished first overall in his age division. As a proud member of Team USA at the Maccabi Games in Israel, and having never before played on red clay, he won a Silver Medal. He was then inducted into the Harbor Point Tennis Club Hall of Fame in September 2023, alongside tennis legends Vic Seixas and Rosie Casals.
After getting to the finals at last year’s Marin Seniors Championships, 75 and overs, long time Harbor Point members Louis Ramirez and Ron Stark found themselves in a similar situation this year. Once again they would be facing the #1 seed and a nationally ranked team. This time that included Clinton Lukeroth, ranked number one in his age group in singles and doubles in Northern California for 2023, won the singles title this year, and with his longtime partner, Ron Wihlidal, is ranked in the top ten nationally in doubles. To add spice to the match, this was the same pair that beat Louis and Ron, 0 and 1, in the semifinals of the Pacific Coast Seniors, in Berkeley, just two weeks before.
On a very windy, difficult day at Belvedere Tennis Club, Louis and Ron found a way, upped their game, and came away with an incredible upset victory, 5-7, 7-5, 10-6. As Ron said afterwards, “Never in doubt. All glory to Harbor Point!
We don’t forget who brung us.”
Congratulations to Louis and Ron! Well done indeed. You make us proud!
